I agree with Prof. Dhar - science is best learnt by doing. Textbooks are an inefficient and difficult way to learn science. With the spread of smartphones, doing science virtually through smartphone apps would work much better. We created a free app for learning electromagnetism which about 100,000 people are using (9,10th grade). Details are on our website - http://www.mazalearn.com

I've combined all my ideas for the new education policy. Hope it will be useful.
Requirement of a flexible system which accommodates students of all kinds and helps the growth of all regardless of their individual approach or pace of learning. To point out flaws we face today with suggested solutions:

1.Lack of interdisciplinary subjects or choice of varied combination of subjects
For eg: An aspiring archaeologist would want to study both biology and history or a student interested in Hindustani classical music would not only want to learn the ragas but also study the healing effects & application of modern science in it. While the present education system follows the age-old system of categorizing subjects which in today's growing interdisciplinary world fails to provide the necessary approach.
Hence, there shall not be any specific "streams" such as Science, Commerce and Arts like it has been till date, but rather have a variety of subjects which the students shall opt for based on their interests.
There can also be a "General Studies" subject which can be opted for those having a wide range of interests.

2.Compulsion of?deciding a stream after 10th without a choice for general studies (for those having wide interests/undecided over any specific stream)
Some students decide at an early age what they want to pursue which makes them easy to choose the subjects accordingly. While many students remain undecided either because they couldn't recognize their skills and interest or because they have wide range of interests. Hence, flexibility shall be such that their interested subjects make them closer to their choice of career.

3.Lack of training of basic skills that are essential for survival in a civilized society without which the whole point of "education" goes in vain
Wonder why the?essentialities of "education" was ignored all this time!
Education doesn't just mean providing information from the world around, but more importantly means to enable a person live with, apply and make him/herself self-sustained civilian in a civilized society.?But many of the following?haven't been included in the curriculum, probably?left for the child's family to teach.?However, education means and?shall definitely include all of these-
?-Cooking & nutrition: One of the essentialities of survival not taught! Basics of healthy cooking has to be taught which even if the person not taught at home, shall be able to make use of in the time of need. Also, the required knowledge on nutrition with respect to the food that are eaten need to be studied in detail because if we need to produce quality human resources we need to take care of their health.
-Cleanliness and maintenance: Teaching how to clean toilets and wash dishes after use, might sound silly but even highly learnt persons lack the ability to do simple tasks. More importantly they teach mannerism, civic behavior and raise the dignity of the person.
-Sports & Physical education: The team spirit that is learnt in sports is unlike any other. Also it is important to continue equal attention even in higher classes & higher education because India not have the largest number of malnutrition children but also has the 2nd largest number of obese individuals who are affected by physical inactivity.
-Banking and services: Being self-reliable is to have sufficient know-how of maintaining one's finances, making personal budgets, minor investments, saving money for future use, insurances (life, health, vehicle etc), schemes that one can benefit from etc. Since today many educated suffer without benefiting from the schemes meant for them due to lack of awareness and knowledge of it. Moreover, lack of information makes them prey to frauds.
-Self defense: Needless to say the need of self defense during a criminal attack. Building ness and techniques to tackle the situation.
-Counseling and stress management techniques: Stress is an uninvited ever ready guest in one's mind. Yoga must be taught and practiced?to make the student self-reliable in dealing stress. Also special attention must be provided to teenagers in making them understand of their?mental and bodily?changes, coping with several difficulties and sensitive issues that come up during those prime years with high respects and sensitivity. Making them realize of the consequences of getting carried away with the urge of lust, smoking , drugs etc. Moreover, it'd be even more productive to conduct parent-student interaction sessions to bridge the gap that is most often seen during a student's teenage.
- Discussions: There is no much use in having a "General Knowledge" book today, as it doesn't really act anybody's attention. However, discussions and debates?involving general awareness is extremely important and much more efficient than having the text book. It also develops better communication skills in a well mannered behavior which lacks even in most educated people today.

4. Lack of sensitivity in understanding the Student's interests and grading overall performance based on few skills:
It is said that every human is unique in the sense that they possess different skills and interests. But the present learning only forces the students to excel in specified areas. The learning environment shall be such that the students recognize their skills and interests, work towards them?and excel in their interests. We must build a system that isn't competing with others but competing with themselves and excelling in building their own unique self.
There are different kinds of students. Some who have a variety of skills and are average or better than average in the same, some who score low in certain skills but higher in certain others, some who are extremely good at a particular skill and average/low in the others etc. If we enforce students to limit themselves to academic subjects like science, social and maths, we are encouraging growth of only few students. In any subject, acquiring knowledge related to it is different from skills relating the subject. For eg: knowing the scientific reason behind an occurrence is different from developing the skills of scientific/analytical reasoning. Similarly studying the music theory is different from having the skill of grasping the notes of a song and singing melodiously.?The skills are either already present in the raw stage?(genetically)?or the skills develop due to external factors. Hence, it is important for students to have the knowledge of the surroundings compiled in science, social studies and maths but grading the overall performance of?a student merely by scores in these subject is absolute injustice. After grading the students over their knowledge on those core subjects, they shall be graded in the subjects of the?skills they posses. This will not only reveal their potentials but also encourage them to perform better in the areas they lag behind, boosting their self-confidence.

5. Lack of providing special training for prodigy children:
For today's Indian population, it is estimated that there are about 13 million prodigy children. This is a huge number we are neglecting. And prodigy simply means they can do wonders in a particular field of interest. If the 13 million children have a learning environment that helps them identify their potentiality in a field, they can be provided with special training so that they contribute immensely in their field. This will help the nation and the world largely.

6. Lack of exposure to part time job
Making a flexible system of education also means that for those who take their own time learning may do so without being burdened financially. At present, having a job mostly means after one has entirely finished studying. It is due to this concept its become competitive world to finish studying ASAP and apply for job. However, if job becomes a part of learning experience along with further studying the subject of interest, then it'd be like upgrading the operating system with new features and commercially increasing its product value.

7. Promoting Research and Development:
Providing the jobs of research assistant/fellow?(of different grades depending on age and qualification) right from a young age would provide exposure to different kinds of research, motivate creative thinking and encourage to research in any field of choice such as core life sciences, archaeology, anthropology, public policy, art, music, dance, sports?etc.

8. Lack of teachers:
On one hand we have many schools lacking teachers and on the other we have many graduates/post-graduates switching to being home-makers. These home-makers can be a great source of teachers if they wish to teach subjects?they seem to know the best out of the variety of subjects or practical skills and not restricted to core subjects. These can conduct classes from webcamera or at least send recorded teachings.

It might seem to be a very complex strategy to be implemented but all it requires is understanding the needs of the young human resources that have the potential to make India the superpower. Making the education system skill development oriented will not help build original makers of things?and employment generators rather than employment seekers.

The English, Mathematics and Science are the nightmares of village students. The system of "All Pass" up to metric level makes students a false confidence that they never fail. To over come this, we should have a strict evaluation system from the KG level onwards and it should be maintained through the higher levels. A student who is not well versed with the formulae, grammar etc. in the lower class, if promoted to higher grade will not be able to cope with the studies & end with a paper degree.

1. Learning by doing is the most effective way of teaching, especially Science, for as goes the saying : "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand. - Confucious".
2.The teaching of various subjects should be integrated so that the students can see the relevance of various subjects in day to day life. A paper giving an example of this approach can be seen at :

Digitization of education is the necessity now. Teaching & Learning materials should be developed in digitized form as in simple presentation (Consists of detailed in explain of Theory, Solved problems of text and reference standard books & previous year exam papers) is to be used by students as substitute whenever required. Not only students avail its benefit but the teachers also in need.Teaching should be most effective if along with Teaching, Observation & Evaluation should be done in strict
