Corporation of Chennai is preparing a proposal towards Smart City Challenge which would include city wide smart urban solutions as well as identification of areas within the city for its implementation.

The proposal would be defined primarily based on voice of Chennai residents. An extensive citizen engagement programme is established by Corporation of Chennai to document the views and concernsfor the same.

Residents may post their opinion and ideas on civic services such as transport, parking, water supply, sanitation, energy, housing, IT solutions, health, education, safety and security. Your views, opinion and solutions on urban issues faced by Chennai would not only support a better tomorrow for Chennaites, it will also make Chennai a strong contender for getting shortlisted as one of the first 20 cities in India to implement Smart City Solutions in Phase 1.

Chennai citizen and community is its biggest strength. Let’s participate to make this proposal inclusive and meaningful for every common man, every citizen.

The last date to submit your comments is 15th October, 2015.

Having good roads with pedestrian walking space across Chennai is the most important thing. Off late the pedestrian walking space has been reduced in size in order to widen the roads in few localities which makes it worse for pedestrians. Also there are no proper roads in most of the residential areas and it makes things worse during rainy season. I understand the amount of importance Government gives in maintaining good roads in a few areas, but this has to be done throughout the city.

S. Ravichandrran :

1. During rainy season or continuous rain, usually we find in some of the roads, waters are running like rivers which finally mixes with the drainage. Same water can be channalised and stored can be used for future demands.
2. WASTE MANAGEMENT: Lot of Wastes are collected in Chennai City. Same can be converted to Bio Gas, which is a good saving if wastes are properly utilized.
3. OXYGEN FACTORY: Every tree produce oxygen for two people in its life. Every one plant a tree.

Sir, Chennai being in the seismic zone needs special construction protocol, but its debatable whether people in general & the builders follow any set regulation. The CMDA along with architects, soil testing consultants should formulate new rules for buildings, especially high rises and follow though with regular inspections. Penalties / regularisation will not help in this regard. Possible remedial measures for older buildings should also be suggested & highlighted.

Sir, well planned cities have dedicated pedestrian walkways. Unfortunately, most of the streets, even major roads have poor pedestrian platforms, if present poorly / irregularly aligned, long stretches of barricades / medians with no visible pedestrian crossing, vehicle drivers who don't respect zebra crossings & itinerant street vendors also as a corollary jay walkers & "mobile using" walkers blissfully unaware of the surroundings. Pedestrian sub-ways & overpasses are seldom utilised fully.

Mayor of Chennai requested to initiate "Swacha Chennai" campaign. Despite good efforts of Chennai Corporation streets in many Residential areas remain dirty due to public apathy, especially from the lower strata of society that throw garbage & food remains on streets leading to stray animals & resulting hazards.
Commercial activity , especially go-down/ warehousing be not allowd in residn

No commercial activity be allowed in purely residential areas, especially warehousing / godowns

Without HIGH LEVEL CO-OPERATION, UNDERSTANDING, DEDICATION and COMMITMENT BY PEOPLE OF THE CONCERNED CITY. NOTHING IS POSSIBLE !! PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW AND UNDERSTAND """ CHARM OF DISCIPLINE "
MASSES SHOULD BE ADDRESSED FIRST ...MAINTENANCE IS MOST ESSENTIAL.

I believe that Government is a Large Corporate with the requisite manpower, policies, processes and products. The ability of the government to bring in the paradigm shift is far higher than an individual or a small set of people. All that is required is execution. With this belief, I have penned my thoughts on Smart Chennai, which can be found in the pdf attached.

1. All Rivers to be cleaned, built with greenery and walkways on both banks. Resting benches to be provided
2. All major roads should have separate provision for cycling - either for leisure or for official / business purposes, Platforms must on all Roads/Lanes
3.City transportation should be switched to CNG / solar / electric powered - prevent air pollution.
4. 100% implementation of source segregation of waste / recycling
