Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

instead of free wifi, railways can develop some kind of app which will push ads on cell phones before granting users access to basic free internet

add screens in second class sleeper which can show muted adds which can be customised based on the type of passengers in the boggie

generate revenue from advertisement using coaches as good platform for advertisment , tickets have an option with advertisements , all coaches should be modified so that less electricity and water can be consumed , all toilets must have facilities to collect human waste so that there is no dirt in platform area and every coach has big dustbin so that people can use it and dont throw any wastage through window. We should more concentrate on cleanness of trains , platform and tracks .

New Value-Added-Service like Wake-up/Reminder Call for Passengers of Mail/Express train during booking of ticket by Rs-1. By this feature Passengers are notified by their train Schedule by automated IVR/Call center calls. In these calls commercial advertisement can introduce at start & end of these calls. This is an opportunity to increase non-fare revenue for Indian Railways.

The station roofs can be given on lease to private players who can install solar panels which can feed the produced electricity to the grids to earn profits. The tickets can also be sent online to those who get their tickets from the station counters to save the paper. The seats reserved for ministers and VVIP can be reduced considerably. Upgradation of tickets can include some charge say 10% of the base fare. Platform paveblocks/floor stones can be used for advertisements in aesthetic manner

Dedicated freight corridors, less fares and tax exemptions for goods trains. The trains can have screens that can show advertisements. The big railway stations like Chennai Central can be privatised and can be developed as a mall with platform on ground floor. This way the land can be utilized in the cities. The trains can have solar panels installed which can contribute to the clean energy. The stations can have office spaces. The stations can have multi level parking in big cities.

Respected prabhu sir,
my suggestion for increase the revenue for railways.
1. the waste/salvage i.e the wooden sleeper, iron sleeper and old iron tracks ,old electric/telephone poles are lying here and there near railways tracks are to be auctioned all over India.
2. the land of Indian railways parallel to railway tracks where no expansion is planed are to be given on lease to the near by farmers for agriculture use. it will earn revenue for railways and farmers

Dear sir, thanks for giving opportunity. Railway needs large power for its operations. And installing its own thermal power plant is best solution to get its power demand. Any way coal transportation is also done by own facilities. All its power demand should be generated by its own.
