Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Please find my suggestion
a) Large population traveling have smart phone, use Wi-Fi inside the train to stream in-train entertainment.user can connect to Wi-Fi and view the programs, there can advertisement similar to tevelsion in interval of 15 mins or 10 mins. This is huge avenue of revenue for railways
b) There is lot land unused along the rails , some of them can be leased to farmer or commercial purpose.
c)Invite or JV with solar energy to set-up plants on land available with railways.

Same as OLA Cabs/ Uber Cabs Indian Railway may run their own Cab services for their respective Stations in that way it will be easier for travelers to book their whole journey "from home to destination point" in IRCTC itself and it will also generate revenue.

Further, Ind. Railway may decrease the amount of fine imposed on any wrong doing, in this way a person will pay the fine instead of giving bribe to RPF / TC and also regular vigilance should be done to avoid corruption.

Organic Farmers market should be setup on stations.

The area near the tracks or stations should be used to produce organic crops which can be sold and revenue generated.

Heavy fines should be imposed on all the passengers littering the trains and stations and all the people defecating and urinating on the tracks.

Each train and station should have Clean up Marshals to control littering.

All the stations throughout the country should construct Commercial structures above each station and rent it for commercial purposes.
In Villages, station plus 1 floor above the station should be constructed.
In Tier 2 & 3 cities it should be station plus 2 to 5 floors above the station and in metro cities station plus 10 and more floors like Vashi Station in Navi Mumbai
On the top floor solar panels and wind mills be installed for power generation
It can be done via PPP and BOT systems

Railways must levy penalty for all passengers who ware found littering the railway station, trains or premises. Railway police must charge small amounts as penalty for littering or dirtying premises/coaches etc and these amounts can be used as revenue. First time offenders may be charged small amounts as penalty, but amount may be increased based on repeat offenses, and serious offenses.

Railways can associate with local bodies to rent platforms for jogging at specific time periods at local stations where there are not too much rush.

Sir,
Several private vendors sale food items, on the platform and inside the coach. Railways should allow only vendors with licence to sell the food items and collect the nominal fee on the daily basis from these vendors. This will not only increases the revenue, railways can have control on the quality food and safety of the passengers.

Sir,
Indian railways can start AC affordable waiting halls for general passengers too at the major stations. This will definitely earn additional revenue.
