Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Railways have units like hospitals, stores depots etc,. where lot of packing materials like carton boxes, wooden boxes are discarded. At present there is no accountability on these. A contract can be awarded to take them and pay railways appropriate sum.

Railway purchases many equipments like computers, fax machine, medical equipments etc., At the end of life they are sent to Stores Depot for disposal which they are sold at a throw away price. For any purchase on replacement account, a take back value should be quoted by the tenderer which if profitable can be opted. In the present system old things are transported over 100km sometime incurring cost more than sale value and also lot of administrative work.

The rooftop area in prime station is an important asset that Railway should tap. Constructing commercial buildings over platform instead of asbestos/other roof can fetch heavy. For example in Chennai, Mambalam station is situated in very popular commercial area. A huge commercial complex can be built over the platform area which may fetch several crores as rent each year. PPP model can be also be tried.

Use of Human waste can make a change. As almost waste like urine and sewage from each toilet of passenger train goes on track and none of use. so if it is collected and processed than the byproduct can be beneficial to our society and railway can get more revenue from it.The cost of it may be as have to attach one tank in passenger train but profit may be higher than that and also cleaning cost of track may be decreased as of lower waste on track.. think of it.
