Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Booking of unreserved tickets for all stations through mobile/pc application without printing the ticket at ATVMs would enable proper paperless concept of railways. Now the facilityis available at Suburbans at Mumbai and Chennai. I feel it should be extended to all stations as lakhs of printouts are being made through the unreserved ticketing system and lakhs are being wasted, as the passenger tends to throw off it after a journey is completed, thus increasing litters around.

Small kiosks may be set up under franchise scheme in manned level crossings with tea/coffee/snacks, toilet etc for the benefit of motorists. The waiting at the level crossings would then become enjoyable!

1) The trains can be installed with Railways own Audio Channel facility to be played inside the train, that will have huge listener base. This huge listener base will attract advertisements which can generate good amount of revenue for the railway.

2) The railway stations can be leased to install telecom towers of various public/private companies as Airtel, BSNL, Vodafone, etc. These companies pays a good rent amount for such towers. This will solve two purposes
a) Revenue
b) Connectivity

distribute the contract in between themselves and dont sell there alloys to small contractors.
This in turn becomes a costly affair as the companies offload to the contractors the company adds its profit on total contract +it sells the electrodes to the particular contractor only who again bills it to the company and company intern bills to railways so company earns twice and railways pays the cost

Saving is the best earnings Its is found that in most of the drms there is a cartel of contractors In certain cases the cartel is nation wide If these cartels are busted railway will get the services at better price and there will be lot of saving. for example the points and crossings are repaired regular basis There are only three companies who has approval for the type of electrodes to be used for points and crossings 1)Ewac alloys ( a L&T Group company) 2) FOn and 3sun ultra these co i

Railway can start coin/card operated selling terminal, re-introduce weighing machine. Start gaming center at railway station (People spend a lot in games). I haven't seen super markets in India inside premises that would be encouraging steps. Also sell air ticket in railway station.

install machines/terminal to prefill reservation chart at reservation center/online. Which will generate an ID which can be used to buy tickets. This will save data entry time for ticket counter.
