Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

We have enough empty space in Railway stations , The department should construct Low budget hotels / Service Apartments for stay with PPP model. We can also make Service apartments in Tourist places like GOA , RAJASTHAN, UTTARAKHAND . We have foreign guests who book service apartment for 6 & Months for almost 2500$ a month. The Government can make good amount of revenue which can use to make better quality Toilets in Indian Trains.

Again there should be extra charges for carrying unnecessary heavy luggages and that too in large number. Atleast this can be controlled.

There are several aspects of cost of creating or installing a solar electricity generator. many of these costs have been taken care of along the railway lines. There are often poles of electricity along there too. Solar power generation along the railway tracks would be cost effective and certainly cheaper than installing elsewhere from scratch. Besides, maintenance would be easier.

Chennai, Mumbai.. Suburban railway stations need to be protected with sliding doors in the platforms. Which can be achieved by sponsoring/advertising companies too. We can reduce the number of deaths.

Develop stations on PPP model, give slots to private sector to run their trains on existing tracks, develop land owned by railways.
