Guwahati, the largest city in the entire North East India is the major political, economic and educational nerve center. The city’s strategic location, connectivity and the economic opportunities have accelerated the process of urbanization to make it one of the fastest growing Indian city and has earned it the distinction of being called the “Gateway to the North Eastern Region of the Country”.

Picturesquely located with the mighty Brahmaputra in the North and Hills and Plateau of Meghalaya in the South, the City is a melting pot of culture, ethnicity with a cosmopolitan colour and at the same time retaining a strong backdrop of the indigenous Assamese identity. The universal cross lateral problems connected with urbanization has however surfaced over the years as a result of the exponential growth of the City.

It is in this backdrop that Guwahati, one of the fastest growing Indian City has been selected as one of the 98 Smart Cities across the Country and is now competing in the second stage challenge to earn the distinction of being selected as one of the city to launch the dream Smart City Mission. The Government of Assam and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation requests the participation of the Citizens of the City, the State and the entire North East India to win this race in making Guwahati one of the best City in the Country by evolving a Vision, a citizen centric Smart City Proposal to qualify in the second stage challenge. Citizens are requested to participate in this race to make Guwahati Smart City one of the best city to live by giving their views, suggestions, innovative smart solutions towards creation and development of smart civic infrastructures, creation of safe, sustainable amenities and easing the current deficiencies and inconveniences faced by the residents and citizens. Citizens are requested to participate in the mygov.in platform and send suggestions at the following addresses on or before 30th November, 2015:

1. Rain water drainage should be given priority by developing/digging the Bharalu River with proper gradient & locks. Six to 8 km long Bharalu river can be developed as a transport facility also.
2. Banning of plastic bags should be done to avoid clogging of drains.
3. Special incentive to be given to the building owners to generate
energy from solar cells.
4. The registration of second car should be made very expensive.
5. Multi storey car park to be developed to avoid congestion.

1. In spite of Brahmaputra, more than 75% people of Guwahati are not provided water supply. The Smart City should be designed to ensure adequate water and electricity supply.
2. Medical Facilities: The proposed smart city shall ensure advanced medical facilities like those of AIIMS, Apollo, Max, Vedanta etc.
3. Integrated Public Transport must be planned to ease out congestion.
4. Solid waste management on priority basis in Smart City
5. Emphasis on Renewable source of energy

1. Guwahati should preferably be developed as a twin-city with North and South Guwahati linked by a road bridge built across Brahmaputra at Guwahati. It will release the pressure of population and vehicular traffic presently faced by the highly congested Uzan Bazar, Fancy Bazar & Paltan Bazar areas.
2. Dipar Beel at Jhalukbari to be developed as a Lake with water sports facilities.
3. A new satellite town can be developed around the Deepar Beel with lots of open space, greenary, Sports Cmplx

Attended the seminar on the smart city proposal.

Indeed interesting and challenging.

I have to appreciate the effort put up by the gmc and their consultants WAPCOS and OASIS to envisage the majestic possibilities for the city.
And the vision presentation itself was a treat. There may be a lot of arguments and counter arguments but I reckon that the way ahead of us is along this vision suitably incorporating the citizens aspirations. Hope the government and the citizens utilize the chanc

It is great to hear that my home city GUWAHATI is included among the 100 smart cities to be developed in near future. While planning TWO most important problems which needs to be addressed are one a RAPID MASS PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM connecting all the areas within Gauhati Municipal Corporation area with possible extention towards the Gopinath Bordoloi Inter.. Airport and another is EFFECTIVE Ways to get rid of the WATER LOGGING PROBLEM faced by the citizens even after a small spell of rain.
