To generate awareness about the importance of handloom industry and its contribution to the socio-economic development of the country, 7th August is celebrated every year as “National Handloom Day”.
August 7 was chosen as the National Handloom Day to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement which was launched on this day in 1905 in the Calcutta Town Hall.
The first National Handloom Day was inaugurated on 7th August 2015 by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the Centenary Hall of Madras University in Chennai.
Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) in collaboration with MyGov is organizing a selfie contest where Indian citizens are requested to wear and showcase their bonding with Indian handlooms by sharing interesting selfies with Indian Handloom.

10 interesting entries will be displayed on the official website (https://handlooms.nic.in) of DC(Handlooms).
