In the last 12 years, SBM(G) has evolved from a sanitation programme into a nationwide movement that has improved public health, enhanced dignity of women, empowered communities and promoted sustainable rural development. Building on the achievement of Open Defecation Free (ODF) status, SBM(G) 2.0 has expanded its focus to sustaining sanitation outcomes through interventions such as Individual Household Latrines (IHHLs), Community Sanitary Complexes (CSCs), Solid and Liquid Waste Management, Plastic Waste Management, Faecal Sludge Management, GOBARdhan, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) and Capacity Building. The current phase of the Mission is scheduled to conclude in March 2027.

As the Department prepares the roadmap for the next phase of rural sanitation, it seeks ideas from citizens to sustain and strengthen the gains achieved under SBM(G) while addressing emerging challenges related to waste management, resource recovery, environmental sustainability, Operation & Maintenance (O&M) and long-term community ownership of assets and outcomes. Innovative, practical and scalable solutions are required to enhance sanitation service delivery, strengthen waste management systems, promote behavioural change and accelerate the transition towards a circular waste-to-wealth economy. Given that the diversities of rural areas from urban cities, suggestions and ideas, specific to rural scenarios will be highly appreciated. Along with these, with peri-urban areas / villages also growing fast and having characteristics of urban centers, solutions specific for such areas are also being sought.

The success of SBM(G) has been driven by the spirit of Jan Bhagidari (People's Participation). Citizens, Gram Panchayats, SHGs, youth, Swachhagrahis and other stakeholders have been at the forefront of transforming rural sanitation and their continued participation will remain critical for sustaining these achievements.

Accordingly, the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti in collaboration with MyGov, invites citizens, youth, Gram Panchayats, SHGs, academic and research institutions, development partners and other stakeholders to share their suggestions and ideas for the next phase of rural sanitation programme on the following:

      1. Areas to be taken up (including existing areas where gaps may be remaining)
      2. New technological interventions for SWM, GWM, FSM.
      3. Rural Sanitation
      4. Solutions for treating pollution in small nallahs/rivulets discharging into rivers in rural areas.
      5. Adoption of solutions based on traditional knowledge and ancient wisdom in new settings for rural India.
      6. Any other area related to the programme.

The suggestions received will help and guide the next phase of SBM(G) and contribute to building cleaner, healthier and environmentally sustainable villages that will be strong contributors for achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat@2047.

      Participation Guidelines

      1. All Citizens, youth (including students), Gram Panchayats & SHGs, academic and research institutions, development partners, NGOs and other stakeholders are invited to contribute ideas for shaping the next phase of rural sanitation and solid-liquid waste management under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen).
      2. For detailed information about SBM(G) Phase II, applicants may visit the SBM(G) Phase II operational guidelines available on website of the Department (https://swachhbharatmission.ddws.gov.in). The guidelines can also be assessed through: https://swachhbharatmission.ddws.gov.in/sites/default/files/Guidelines/SBMG%20Phase-II%20Operational%20Guidelines.pdf
      3. Suggestions may be submitted on any of the major components of SBM(G), including Individual Household Latrines (IHHLs), Community Sanitary Complexes (CSCs), Solid Waste Management, Liquid Waste Management, Plastic Waste Management, GOBARdhan, Faecal Sludge Management, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) and Capacity Building. Global best practices forming the bases of solution, may also duly mentioned and referred.
      4. Participants are encouraged to propose innovative, technology-driven, scientific, managerial, practical, feasible and scalable solutions to address rural sanitation challenges and strengthen long-term sustainability.
      5. Suggestions should focus on supporting the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti, in developing the roadmap for the next phase of rural sanitation for India.
      6. Participants are required to register on the MyGov platform and submit their suggestions through the prescribed online form.

Smart Swachh Gram: AI Enabled Waste Management and Sustainable Rural Sanitation System Idea Submission Rural villages need a sustainable and technology enabled sanitation system that goes beyond basic cleanliness. I propose a Smart Swachh Gram model integrating Artificial Intelligence, IoT, community participation and digital monitoring. The system will support household wet and dry waste segregation, GPS based waste collection, decentralized composting, recycling and waste to wealth activities. Greywater can be treated through low cost decentralized systems and reused for agriculture, gardening and plantation. A mobile based platform can allow citizens to report sanitation issues such as overflowing waste bins, drainage problems and illegal dumping. Gram Panchayats can monitor collection, sanitation activities and village cleanliness through a digital dashboard. Women Self Help Groups, youth groups and local entrepreneurs can participate in waste collection, compost production

Inviting Ideas for the Next Phase of Rural Sanitation Rural sanitation is an essential foundation for a healthy, dignified, and developed India. Over the past few decades, India has made significant progress in improving sanitation facilities in rural areas. The construction and use of toilets, campaigns for cleanliness, awareness about hygiene, and improved waste management have transformed many villages. However, sanitation is not a one-time achievement. It is a continuous process that requires innovation, community participation, technology, and responsible behaviour The next phase of rural sanitation must therefore move beyond simply providing toilets. It should focus on creating clean, healthy, sustainable, and environmentally responsible villages. This requires fresh ideas from citizens, students, local governments, social organisations, entrepreneurs, and communities From Toilet Construction to Sustainable Sanitation One of the major lessons from India's sanitation journey

Rural areas can benefit from simple waste management systems where waste is collected, separated, and converted into compost or biogas. More awareness programs can encourage people to maintain cleanliness and take responsibility for their villages. Technology can also be used to monitor sanitation services and improve waste collection. Such practical solutions can help create cleaner, healthier, and sustainable villages.

The next phase of rural sanitation must shift toward scalable infrastructure, technological integration, and a circular economy. First, implementing sensor-based monitoring systems on community waste plants and water sources ensures real-time operational tracking and automated maintenance alerts. Second, villages should transition to decentralized resource recovery centers that mechanically process plastic, biodegradable waste, and faecal sludge into commercial bio-fertilizers and energy. Third, funding models should utilize performance-linked fiscal incentives, where village councils receive state budgets based on measurable, audited metrics of waste processed. Finally, constructing climate-resilient, low-water containment systems will prevent groundwater contamination during extreme weather events. This structural and tech-driven approach ensures long-term operational sustainability

We should not only focus on building toilets and drainage. We should Ensure having proper cleanliness and hygiene. Ensure every family has a toilet and promote proper FSM. We should use Greywater reuse technic to save water. Government can do campaign to aware the people about sanitation and hygiene. We can aware the people by giving reward for clean street and house . Awareness through schools 📚.Students can make posters, rallies and short plays to spread cleanliness messages.

**Swachh Gram Service Grid – A Sustainable, Technology-Enabled Rural Sanitation Model** The next phase of SBM(G) should shift from “asset creation” to **continuous sanitation services**. I propose a “Swachh Gram Service Grid” at Gram Panchayat/cluster level covering solid waste, greywater, faecal sludge and drainage. 1. **Village Sanitation Map:** Digitally map households, drains, waste points, ponds, toilets, CSCs and vulnerable pollution spots using a simple mobile/GPS-based system. 2. **Door-to-Door Segregation:** Every household receives two/three-bin segregation support. Collection routes can be optimized through a low-cost mobile/QR system. 3. **Waste-to-Wealth:** Wet waste → compost/biogas where feasible; dry waste → Material Recovery Facility and authorized recyclers. A transparent revenue-sharing model can support sanitation workers and SHGs.

Individual Sanitation is somehow completed. There is a need of over all sanitation in villages. My suggestions are : (1) Drain cleaning (2) Pond cleaning (3) Bushes from Road sides to be cleaned (4) Road side plantations to save from encroachment (5) Government Land must be freed from Encroachment …Village Panchayats, NGOs , Cooperative Society, NCC , NSS cadets of Schools should be given encouragement….
