The Union Territory of Daman and Diu, in west India, consists of two separate areas divided by the Arabian Sea. The UT has completed the second open defecation free (ODF) verification of the two districts that comprise of 15 Gram Panchayats, 25 villages and 32,170 rural households.

To create awareness about the National Entrepreneurship Awards (NEA) more engaging amongst the youth, an Entrepreneurial Success Stories Competition was conducted live on 19th August, 2019 by Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) on the MyGov portal which ended on 8th October, 2019. Participation in the completion was open to all the Indian citizens aged 18 years and above.

The district administration of Dhanbad in Jharkhand has taken up various novel initiatives to plant saplings and conserve water. One of them is the preparation and distribution of a whopping 2.5 lakh seed balls through members of Self Help Groups (SHGs). The seed balls are scattered in colliery areas with open-cast coal mines to take root, increase green cover and reduce air pollution.

The Clean Paper Initiative by Government Senior Secondary School in Makha of East Sikkim converts old pages stocked in their school into note books, thereby adding value to paper and reusing the same rather than selling it to scrap vendors. The programme which earns them a small revenue is a part of the school Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

As many as 1393 soak pits were constructed and handed over to individuals and the community in Thirumalaypalam Block of Khammam district in Telangana since the start of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) on 1st July, 2019. As a result, groundwater levels in dug wells and bore wells have shown a remarkable increase.

A chance to meet some of the top women leaders in science from India and abroad, grass root innovators awaits you at the Women Scientists’ and Entrepreneurs’ Conclave of the India International Science Festival (IISF) at Kolkata. The third edition of women scientists’ conclave to be organized on November 7 and 8, 2019 at Biswa Bangla Convention Center is an effort to inspire young women to take up careers in Science, Technology and Entrepreneurship and help them get exposed to opportunities in the field. It celebrates women in science and also paves a way for more women to be part of a larger scientific community.

India has made significant strides in scientific and technological development. It is important to translate the scientific knowledge into innovations through start-ups and industry so as to facilitate India to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth in the coming decades. This goal can be achieved, through developing scientific temper among the masses and by strengthening India’s science and technology institutions and furthering their basic research and enticing talents to science.
