The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MSJE), in collaboration with MyGov, invites comments and suggestions from stakeholders and the general public on the draft accessibility standards for the Build Environment sector. These draft standards, which identify non-negotiable rules, have been prepared to strengthen the creation of barrier-free environments in accordance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and relevant rules.

All interested individuals are requested to carefully examine the proposed standards and submit their feedback, comments, and suggestions on the MyGov platform, ensuring that personal details are entered accurately during registration.

What is the built environment model? The ten categories are subsumed in four overarching themes: physical responsiveness, making sense, sense of belonging and magnetism. The model invites replication in other built settings, but forms a promising framework for the design of buildings that should improve the experiences of future building users.

What are the five main components of an environment? Atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and solar energy are the five components of our environment. The gaseous layer that surrounds the Earth is known as the atmosphere. Lithosphere is the outermost layer of the Earth which is known as the crust and its main components are the tectonic plates.

What is the purpose of the built environment? The built environment touches all aspects of our lives, encompassing the buildings we live in, the distribution systems that provide us with water and electricity and the roads, bridges and transportation systems we use to get from place to place.

What is environmental sustainability in the building sector? By prioritising eco-friendly building materials and practices, sustainable construction helps to preserve ecosystems, conserve natural resources and reduce energy consumption. Consequently, this leads to a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions and a lower carbon footprint for the built environment.
