The District Administration Baghpat invites citizens, youth, innovators and institutions from across India on MyGov to share innovative and practical ideas to transform the Shri Parshurameshwar Pura Mahadev Mahashivratri Mela into a Zero Waste Mahotsav on theme “Bhakti Bhi, Prakriti Bhi”.

Building on the successful implementation of a Zero Waste model during Falguni Mahashivratri 2026 celebrations, this initiative aims to further strengthen sustainable practices and develop Baghpat as a model for green and responsible religious gatherings in India.

Aligned with the vision of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), Swachh Bharat and sustainable tourism, the initiative promotes environmentally responsible behaviour, reduction of waste, resource efficiency and community participation in large public events.

What kind of ideas are we looking for?
1. Participants are encouraged to submit practical, scalable and innovative ideas in areas such as:
a. Waste management and zero waste systems
b. Plastic-free alternatives for melas and religious events
c. Eco-friendly materials and green infrastructure
d. Awareness campaigns and behavioural change strategies
e. Volunteer and youth engagement models
f. Use of technology (apps, QR-based services, monitoring systems, etc.)
g. Sustainable tourism and visitor management

How to participate?
1. Submit your idea in maximum 200–300 words
2. Focus on solutions that can be practically implemented on ground
3. You may include examples, models or case references

What will happen to your ideas?
Selected ideas will be reviewed by the District Administration and considered for implementation during the Shravani Mahashivratri Mela scheduled in second week of August 2026. Selected contributions may also be recognised as part of a district-led innovation initiative and documented as good practices.

This is an opportunity to contribute to building a national model of sustainable religious events, promote environmental responsibility, and strengthen citizen participation in governance. Your ideas can help demonstrate how tradition, technology and sustainability can work together for a better future.

To make Shri Parshurameshwar Pura Mahadev Mahashivratri Mela a true Zero Waste Mahotsav, every visitor should become a partner in protecting the environment. Separate bins for biodegradable waste, recyclables and other waste should be installed throughout the temple premises with clear signboards in Hindi and English. Volunteers can guide devotees on proper waste disposal. Single-use plastic should be completely replaced with eco-friendly alternatives such as leaf plates, areca palm plates, paper cups and cloth bags. Flowers and other organic offerings collected from the temple can be converted into compost or natural incense instead of being discarded. A refillable drinking water system should be provided to encourage people to carry reusable water bottles, reducing plastic bottle waste. Food vendors should be encouraged to use sustainable packaging and rewarded for following green practices. Bhakti Bhi, Prakriti Bhi

Collect all food waste and put them into biogas generators for clean energy. Build public toilets and connect them also to biogas generators for clean energy. Help local farms by teaching them to build biomass gasifiers so their crop residue after harvest can be used to make synthetic natural gas. All of this help in increasing Atmanirbharta if every temple and every village does this.

1. Online CCTV camera monitoring may be done so that nobody throws waste here or there except in waste baskets. Fines may be imposed immediately. 2. The waste of the waste baskets may be used for different purposes like making of organic fertilizers. 3. Water etc poured over ShivLing etc. may be utilized for watering nearby garden plants. In case garden is absent, it may be developed.

MahaShiv Ratri is one of the full of spirutial festivals for hindus. I glad to contribute my ideas and review. My opinion is that the street vendors who sell items for prasad they should provide in "dona pattal" as provided in haridwar and rishikesh to prevent water polution same here we can prevent soil polution. As I had seen in the temple they provide back the coconut to the devotee after offering to lord shiv as prasad so this practice is good to avoid storage.

Circular Zero-Waste Model for Mahashivratri Mela This proposal aims to transform Shri Parashurameshwar Mahadev Mahashivratri Mela into a Zero-Waste event through a community-driven circular model. Single-use plastic and thermocol will be banned, promoting eco-friendly alternatives like pattal, kulhad and reusable steel utensils with a “Use & Wash” culture. Waste segregation will be ensured through green (wet) and blue (dry) bins, along with Nirmalya Kalash for temple offerings. Organic waste will be composted and distributed to local farmers, creating a sustainable waste loop. Local potters and SHGs will supply materials, generating rural employment. A 100m no-plastic, no-vehicle zone around the temple, separate Kanwar routes and decentralized parking will reduce congestion and pollution. Volunteers (Bhole Ki Sena) will ensure awareness and enforcement. This model ensures cleanliness and environmental protection, making Baghpat a national benchmark for sustainable tourism.

Every year, thousands of devotees visit temples to offer prayers, perform rituals, and seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. While this spiritual celebration strengthens faith, it also generates a significant amount of waste, including plastic bottles, disposable plates, flowers, food waste, and packaging materials. By transforming Shri Parshurameshwar Pura Mahadev Temple, Baghpat, into a Zero Waste Mahotsav, we can combine spirituality with environmental responsibility and create a model for sustainable religious celebrations across India. The central idea of a Zero Waste Mahotsav is simple: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Respect Nature. Protecting the environment is also a form of worship because nature is considered sacred in Indian culture.
