India’s independence movement was a series of historic events and sacrifices by thousands of freedom fighters. Undoubtedly Mahatama Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Mangal Pandey, Rani Lakshmibai and many more are amongst the famous freedom fighters and have got the spotlights but there are some unsung heroes who played crucial role in India’s freedom movement. While the country celebrates 75years of its Independence, let’s take a look at some lesser-known freedom fighters of India.
Kuyili: The first woman martyr in Indian History. She was born near Sivagangai district in Tamil Nadu. She was made the commander in chief of the army of Queen Velu Nachiyar, who was the first queen to wage war with the East India Company. It is said that he raised Kuyili by telling her of the many courageous acts of her mother Raju, who sacrificed her life for her people while fighting with a bull, which inspired her.
Kuyili is known for her suicide attack in 1780. While attacking a fort of East India Company, she applied ghee on her body, set herself ablaze and jumped into the armoury of the East India Company, securing victory for Velu Nachiyar. She is regarded as the first suicide bomber in history.
People fondly called this dalit warrior, Veerthalapathy (The Brave Commander) or Veeramangai (The Brave Woman), who belonged to the scheduled caste of Arunthathiyar.
