Ministry of Finance
The Ministry of Finance is responsible for formulating and implementing the Government of India's fiscal and financial policies, managing public finances, and promoting economic growth and financial stability. It prepares the Union Budget, oversees government expenditure and public debt, administers direct and indirect taxation, and formulates policies for the financial sector, Central Government investments, and public enterprises.
The Ministry functions through six Departments:
- Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) – Macroeconomic policy, public debt, capital markets, and the Union Budget.
- Department of Expenditure (DoE) – Government expenditure and public financial management.
- Department of Revenue (DoR) – Direct and indirect tax policy and administration through CBDT and CBIC.
- Department of Financial Services (DFS) – Policies relating to banking, insurance, pensions, and financial inclusion.
- Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) – Management of Central Government equity investments, disinvestment, and asset monetisation.
- Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) – Policy coordination and performance monitoring of Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs).
