The Income Tax Department invites constructive suggestions from citizens, taxpayers, professionals, businesses, and other stakeholders to strengthen its Citizen Charter and make it more transparent, citizen-centric, accessible, and responsive to the evolving needs of taxpayers.

The Citizen Charter reflects the Department's commitment towards delivering quality taxpayer services by defining service standards, timelines, taxpayer rights, and responsibilities. As part of its continuous efforts to improve taxpayer experience in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the Department seeks practical suggestions and innovative ideas to further enhance the Citizen Charter.

Suggestions may be submitted on, but are not limited to, the following areas:

      • Improving taxpayer services and service standards.
      • Simplifying taxpayer interactions with the Income Tax Department.
      • Enhancing transparency, accountability, and service delivery.
      • Strengthening grievance redressal mechanisms.
      • Improving accessibility for senior citizens, women, persons with disabilities, and first-time taxpayers.
      • Promoting digital service delivery and ease of compliance.
      • Making the Citizen Charter easier to understand through simplified language and better communication.
      • Any other suggestions that can make the Income Tax Department more citizen-friendly, efficient, and responsive.

Your valuable suggestions will contribute towards strengthening taxpayer services, promoting trust, and building a transparent, efficient, and citizen-centric tax administration.

Jai hind everyone! To build better taxpayer services, I am suggesting a few simple improvements: By making tax services faster and more efficient and using simple language so everyone can easily understand tax rules , reducing paperwork and encourage easy online services , making the complaint system quick, fair, and transparent . Importantly , by giving special support to senior citizens, women, persons with disabilities, and first-time taxpayers and also by protecting taxpayers' personal information and maintain honesty and accountability and creating awareness through campaigns and workshops so more people understand the importance of paying taxes. Thank you!

This is an excellent initiative by the Income Tax Department to involve citizens in improving public services. A simple, transparent, and technology-driven Citizen Charter will strengthen taxpayer trust, improve service delivery, and contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Create a “Tax Transparency Mirror” — a feature where every taxpayer can see how their tax contribution supports the nation through real-time impact visualization (such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, and public services). This will help citizens understand the value of taxation, increase voluntary compliance, and build a stronger trust-based relationship between taxpayers and the government.

      1. Introduce a “Taxpayer Trust Score” — a transparent, non-punitive system that measures the quality of taxpayer services based on response time, grievance resolution, refund efficiency, and taxpayer feedback. This score should be published publicly for every service division, encouraging continuous improvement and making the tax administration more accountable and citizen-focused. 2. Introduce a “Life Event Based Tax Assistance System” where the Income Tax Department proactively guides citizens during major life events such as first employment, marriage, retirement, starting a business, or inheritance. Instead of taxpayers searching for rules, the system would automatically provide personalised tax guidance, required actions, and compliance support at the right time. This will transform tax administration from reactive service delivery to proactive citizen support.

The Income Tax portal should be made simpler for fast-time users. A step-by-step guide and live chat support should be available to help taxpayers file returns easily.

Hi Team, Currently in India Tax literacy is very less, even highly educated are not able to submit taxes on their own and depending on CAs even though they don't have many investments, companies are providing options and people are paying and using not because of lack of time but not having awareness of submission. even though finance team is updating portal and mentioning making easy but there are not awareness and proper details what to follow. Unfortunately, even in site if there is any grievance the response is not proper and no way to share more details on top of the raised grievance or to raise complaints. the responses are having old options/ different naming which is very difficult to get where the option and what is renamed now. It would help to make it simple for individual users, and it will help to people by introducing as a lesson in economy for high school kids and spread awareness who to submit and when to submit income tax, most of them not sure until they get notice

The Income Tax Department should introduce an Al-powered Tax Assistant available 24×7 in multiple Indian languages to help taxpayers understand notices, calculate taxes, and file returns correctly. A personalized taxpayer dashboard should display refunds, pending actions, compliance status, and deadlines with timely reminders. The Department can also provide simplified video guides and interactive tutorials for first-time taxpayers, students, and senior citizens. A transparent grievance tracking system with fixed resolution timelines and real-time status updates would improve trust. Anonymous feedback after every service can help improve quality. These initiatives will make tax compliance easier, increase transparency, reduce errors, and support the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047

While Faceless Assessment has reduced physical harassment, receiving a scrutiny notice remains highly stressful because the language is often vague. To enhance transparency and accountability, the Citizen Charter must mandate that every scrutiny notice explicitly state the exact parameters that triggered it (e.g., 'Your case was selected due to an unexplained ₹1,50,000 mismatch in mutual fund sales'). Blanket, generic legal notices should be discontinued. Knowing exactly why they are being questioned allows taxpayers to gather the right documents and respond efficiently.

Many honest taxpayers make genuine clerical errors that trigger intimidating automated notices. To simplify interactions, the Citizen Charter should formally include a 'Right to Rectify.' If the system flags a minor, non-fraudulent mismatch between the ITR and the AIS, the taxpayer should be given a 15-day 'Grace Period' alert via SMS/WhatsApp to correct the error before a formal scrutiny notice is generated or penal interest is applied. Treating initial mistakes as errors rather than evasion embodies a truly citizen-friendly tax administration.
